Why This Location?

  • Movie connection: 
    • Kansas City Barbeque is one of the most recognizable filming locations from the original Top Gun (1986). It served as the setting for the famous “Great Balls of Fire” piano sing-along scene featuring Maverick, Goose, and their fellow aviators. For fans, it offers a chance to visit a real location from one of the most iconic action films ever made. 
  • Behind-the-scenes trivia:
    • The production chose Kansas City Barbeque for its authentic atmosphere and proximity to several Navy locations featured in the film. Today, the venue proudly displays Top Gun memorabilia and photos, while continuing to operate as a working restaurant and bar rather than solely as a tourist attraction. 
  • Historic significance:
    • Located near San Diego’s waterfront and naval facilities, the bar reflects the city’s long connection to military aviation. Its role in Top Gun helped make it a lasting part of both San Diego’s cultural identity and film history. 
  • Top Gun Bar story:
    • Over the past 40 years, fans from around the world have visited Kansas City Barbeque, earning it the nickname “The Top Gun Bar.” After surviving a major fire in 2008, the venue was rebuilt and continues to welcome visitors seeking a tangible connection to the film. As Top Gun celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, it remains one of the world’s most famous film tourism destinations.
